About Minecraft Anvil Optimizer

Combining enchantments in the wrong order on an anvil wastes huge amounts of XP, or hits the Too Expensive limit so you cannot finish at all. Pick your item and the enchantments you want, and this optimizer works out an efficient combine order and the total level cost.

The key is the prior-work penalty: every time an item has been used on an anvil, the next combine costs more, doubling each time. Merging books into a balanced order keeps that penalty low.

Why does the order matter?

Each anvil use adds a prior-work penalty of 2 to the power of the number of previous uses, minus one. Applying books one by one to a single item stacks that penalty fast. Merging books together first, then applying them, spreads the penalty out and costs far less XP.

What is the Too Expensive limit?

In survival, any single anvil step that would cost 40 or more levels shows Too Expensive and cannot be done. The optimizer flags this so you know to combine fewer enchantments at once or finish in creative mode.

Books vs applying to the item

Putting an enchantment on from a book is usually cheaper than transferring it from another tool. This calculator assumes you are combining enchanted books, which is the cheapest path for most gear.

Frequently asked questions

What order should I combine enchantments in?
Merge your enchanted books into a balanced order first, then apply them to the item. The optimizer lists the exact steps and the level cost of each.
How do I avoid Too Expensive on an anvil?
Keep every single step under 40 levels. The optimizer warns you when a step crosses that limit so you can split the work up.
Does this work for Bedrock?
The combine order helps on both, but the exact level costs use Java anvil mechanics. Bedrock costs differ slightly.
Is the anvil calculator free?
Yes, it runs entirely in your browser with no sign-up.
