How Nether portal coordinates work

The Nether is eight times smaller than the Overworld, so one block in the Nether covers eight blocks up top. To find where a Nether portal should sit, divide your Overworld X and Z by 8; to go the other way, multiply the Nether X and Z by 8. The Y (height) coordinate is identical in both dimensions, so only X and Z ever change. This calculator does the division and multiplication for you and rounds to the block the game actually links to.

How to link two Nether portals correctly

Build and light your first portal in the Overworld and note its coordinates. Divide X and Z by 8 to get the target Nether coordinates, travel there, and build and light a second portal at that exact spot. Lighting it manually where you want it stops Minecraft from generating a brand-new portal somewhere nearby. Repeat in reverse to link portals you started from the Nether side.

Why a portal links to the wrong place

When you step through, Minecraft looks for an existing portal within roughly 128 blocks in the Overworld or 16 blocks in the Nether and links to the nearest one. If two destinations are close together they can end up sharing a portal, or the game spawns a new one off to the side. Building each portal precisely at the calculated coordinates, and keeping linked pairs far enough apart, keeps every connection where you expect it.
